Shakespeare as a starting point
9th January 2021 - 2- 5pm (EST)/7 - 10pm (GMT) - $20/£15
In this 3-hour workshop we will explore how Shakespeare might inspire you to make a piece of your own work. Using characters and scenes from Shakespeare we will dare to dive into the deep end and create something completely new! Working solo, in pairs and groups we will plant some Shakesperean seeds and see what they could grow into. There will be opportunities to collaborate with each other, to get creative as well as interpretive and to share your discoveries (if you want to). Searching for surprises and original ideas, who knows where we might end up?

Directing Shakespeare Workshop
23rd/24th Jan 2021 - 3 - 6pm (GMT) / 10 - 1pm (EST)- £60/$80
Directing Shakespeare can be a daunting prospect for a number of reasons. First, the scale of the plays can feel very intimidating and finding staging solutions can be a challenge. Second, we are often blocked by the heightened text and the editing work that will inevitably need to happen. And finally, the issue of working with actors on the text, who are often just as weary of the language as the director.
In this workshop on Directing Shakespeare we will look at these three things head on. Through a series of exercises and hypothetical directing challenges we will look at techniques in how to use space skillfully and imaginatively, hints for the editing process and effective ways on how to work with actors on a character.
1. Space - Macbeth - Act 3, Scene 4 - The banquet
2. Editing - Romeo and Juliet - Act 1, Scene 1 - Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?
3. Actors - Ophelia in Hamlet

Shakespeare in a Week: Titus Andronicus
1st - 5th Feb 2021 - 3 - 6pm (GMT) / 10 - 1pm (EST) - £125
Royal Shakespeare Company Director and Bard City AD Owen Horsley is back with SHAKESPEARE IN A WEEK. After 3 successful SIAW online workshops we have decided to come back with Shakespeare’s bloody epic TITUS ANDRONICUS. As with our previous zoom processes (Richard II, MSND and Cymbeline) it will be an involved and practical workshop that not only tackles the play within a week but also provides an approach to classical text that will build your confidence and flex your acting muscles. The focus of this week will be Verse, language, storytelling and ensemble work and we will explore the play in a way that feels collective and collaborative.
The ethos behind all our Shakespeare in a Week workshops is “connection not perfection” so the focus will always be on the process rather than product. This is an opportunity to be brave, to discuss fears about classical work, relish the language of Shakespeare and take inspiration from each other.
TO APPLY: Email your Spotlight link (or your headshot and CV if not applicable) to hello@themonobox.co.uk with SHAKESPEARE IN A WEEK in the email title and why you are interested in doing the course. A detailed itinerary of the course will be provided in advance.
